Leadership Counsel
For the person carrying it alone. One counterpart, no curriculum and no cohort: somebody with no reason to tell you what you want to hear, and positioned to say the thing nobody else in your orbit can afford to.
What is this, actually?
Somewhere to test a decision before you make it, with someone who has no reason to agree with you.
The person on this side of the table usually carries it alone. The owner with nobody above them to check their thinking. The chief executive whose board sees the results but never the doubt. The senior leader expected to have the answer in every room they walk into, and who has quietly stopped having anywhere left to be wrong out loud.
That last one is the actual problem, and it isn’t a shortage of information. You have plenty. It’s that the seniority which makes your judgement worth having is the same seniority that buffered anyone who might have challenged it. The blindspots at this level aren’t the ordinary kind everybody carries. They’re the specific kind that come from being the most senior person in the room with very few, if any, of equivalent standing to push back, and none, or rarely any, that do.
What shape does it take?
Yours. That isn’t a dodge, it’s the whole design.
There’s no curriculum here and no programme to be enrolled in, because the problems that reach this level don’t arrive in a tidy order and don’t repeat. What you bring is whatever is actually on your desk: the decision, the person, the deal, the thing that’s been sitting there for weeks without moving. We work it until it’s bounded, which is usually most of the answer, and then until it’s done. One issue at a time, through to closure, rather than a standing agenda that never empties.
What is fixed is what sits underneath it. It should be no secret by now what we do at Manolutions. Our work is grounded in Total QX™, the same framework the firm reads a business through, so the thinking you get isn’t an improvised opinion. It’s the same standard applied to your decision that we’d apply to your company: good for the customer, good for the people, good for the business, all at once. Read how the framework works.
And what’s said here stays here. No case studies, no war stories with the serial numbers filed off, no mention of your name in a room you’re not in.
Who’s It For?
Business owners. If you carry the business personally, your next decision has real money and your own name attached, and the people around you don’t have the standing or skin in the game to test it with you.
Seasoned pros. If you’ve hit the ceiling that has nothing to do with capability. You already know what you’d tell someone else in your position. The value is finding out whether that survives contact with somebody who has actually sat there.
What it isn’t
Not for rising leaders. This is a senior counterpart for someone who’s either out of or running low on relevant peers. For a leader still building range it’s an expensive and badly shaped answer, and there are better options:
- The accredited pathways, where there’s a curriculum, a cohort, and an external assessment, and all three are the point rather than the compromise. See the accredited training.
- CLEAR-IT™: One-to-one senior counsel that takes one real issue every 30 days and works it through to a designed resolution, six issues cleared, not just discussed, across six months.
- The Crucible™: A six-month group implementation programme, nine peer leaders at a time, that installs ownership behaviour across your business so it runs without you and holds real value to a board, investor or buyer.
Not coaching in the ordinary sense. No energy, no encouragement, no accountability theatre. If what would help is someone in your corner, this is the wrong purchase, and you’ll be told that early rather than sold it anyway.
Not consulting. We’re not going to run the project or rebuild the business from the inside. That’s the advisory work and it’s a different thing. Read what that covers.
Not a peer group. No community, no cohort, no room of people at your level comparing notes. Group work is in The Crucible™. This is one relationship, and it’s private.
Common questions
- Is this leadership coaching?
- No, and the distinction is the point rather than a quibble about words. Coaching asks what you already think, on the assumption the answer is somewhere in you. It usually is, and it usually isn’t enough on its own. Counsel brings a second judgement of equivalent standing to bear on the decision, from someone who has sat where you sit and has no reason to agree with you. If you went looking for a coach and arrived here, that’s the choice in front of you.
- How is this different from the leadership training?
- Training is a course, a cohort, and an assessment, aimed at building capability in a team, and the Certificate IV, Diploma, and Advanced Diploma in Leadership and Management are nationally accredited or have accreditation pending. This is one person, one counterpart, no curriculum, built around whatever is actually in front of you. Different shapes, different buyers, and neither substitutes for the other. See the accredited training.
- Is it confidential?
- Yes, and without qualification. Nothing from these conversations turns up as an anecdote, a case study, or a lesson in someone else’s session.
- What’s expected of me?
- That you do the work between the sessions, and that you’re willing to hear the accurate thing rather than the comfortable one. The second is the one people underestimate.
- Do we have to do a call first?
- No. Read this, decide in your own time, and write when you have. Nobody here will attempt to close you on a phone call.
If that’s the kind of counterpart you’re after, write. Paul reads it, not an assistant. You’ll have an answer within two working days, and if we’re not the right call we’ll tell you. Nobody will chase you.
