Engagement Experience Quotient (XQ™)
Measuring how an experience is felt, the part traditional metrics miss, in brief.
You can measure what a business does. The harder question is how what it does actually feels to the people on the receiving end, because that’s where loyalty is won or lost. The Engagement Experience Quotient (XQ™) measures the felt side of experience, the part traditional metrics miss.
What is the Engagement Experience Quotient?
Two related things, kept distinct. XQ, the Experience Quotient, is the experience intelligence inside Total QX: how well a business understands, designs, and delivers quality experience overall. Engagement XQ is XQ applied to human interactions: how well a specific engagement lands, and whether it moved the outcome it was meant to. The module label carries both; in practice, Engagement XQ is the one you measure.
Why measure the felt experience?
Because products and services commoditise, and how it feels to deal with you is what’s left. Traditional metrics count the activity and the score, calls handled, a satisfaction rating out of five, and stay silent on the thing that actually drives whether someone comes back: how the interaction felt, and whether it did its job. XQ turns that felt quality into something you can see, compare, and improve.
XQ against the usual metrics
- A satisfaction score tells you someone ticked a box. XQ tells you whether the interaction landed.
- A KPI counts that the call happened. XQ reads whether the call built the relationship or dented it.
- Both customer and staff interactions count, because the two shape each other.
How XQ fits the framework
XQ measures the touchpoints that Touchpoint Experience Design™ sets out to build, and it captures the felt Impact that Value Impact Goals™ track. It’s read through the Engagement Efficacy Scale and the Engagement Impact Score, the measurement tools covered in the Implementation and diagnostic tools module.
Common questions
Isn’t this just customer satisfaction, or NPS? No. Those give you a rating. XQ reads the felt quality of the interaction and whether it advanced the outcome, for staff as well as customers. A high satisfaction score can sit on top of a relationship that’s quietly cooling; XQ is built to catch that.
What’s the difference between XQ and Engagement XQ? XQ is the broader experience intelligence, the quality of experience across the whole business. Engagement XQ is that intelligence applied to interactions between people, where it can actually be measured.
Can you really measure a feeling? Well enough to act on. Engagement XQ rates each interaction on a clear scale and looks at the pattern across many, which turns a vague sense of “how we’re doing” into something specific.
